Next Step

Endlich.

Let's move!

Back in Salta, still at the Bus-Terminal I bought a Ticket to Chile. After having made sure my new Credit Card had arrived, I rent a car and drove into the Quebrada de Humahuaca together with Erik to pass the waiting time. Again I was amazed by the colours revealed by this landscape. And then I said good bye Argentina with a big big steak.

Flunky-Ball!

After an impressive day on the Argentinian side of the Iguazu Falls we merit a real assado, prepeared by an Argentinian Photographer, who was in the same hostal as well.
We learned to play Flunky Ball as well, a Game where you have to bring a lot of abilities together - and drink.

After a good night, I had to leave for another bus, going back into the direction of Salta.

Red Planet

It looks as if you where on Mars. The red rocks pile up at every corner to fantastic and bizarre sculptures - the picture gives just an idea (after this, my battery died...)
The combination of green and red colours together with a magic sunset just let us stand there in admire

And what would you take back?

What would you take into a desert?

The drive was really nice - with all the coloured mountains, the salt flats and the viaduct of the tren de las nubes. Until the strange noise of the car started getting louder, in the middle of nowhere - litterally.
We were lucky, and got towed by a truck - in worse contition than our car - to a cabin at the edge of the salt flats. There we could cook a soup and get some sleep.
Next day, we had to wait half a day for a phone, and another half for a new car.
Caroline, Albi and Christian where excellent buddies in the desert - probably one of my best days in the whole trip. Really.

2x4

Mirador

Whenever there's a mirador, you got to go there. It's an addiction. This time I went with Carolin and Christian to admire the view over Salta. Everyone told us it would be a short walk - which turned out to be an hour in the hot, moist air of an Argentinian summer...

The view though was beautiful and the drive down in a Garaventa cablecar felt almost like home.

Salta Mortale

We had seen some posters announcing the fiesta - and knew it was the place to be. Arriving late but hungry we were lucky with the Argentinian culture and got well fed.
There seems to be a fiesta for anything that can be put on a spit and grilled over a fire. We didn't mind...

Let's Tango - with some beats

To celebrate new year, I met Anita and Ade again - two my friends from the Spondylus, Spondylus.
Of course we celebrated in style, with Champaign (thanks Chris!) for the breaks on our walk to the Crobar Club where we opened our minds until the sun came up.

En garde!

From Peru I went straight to Buenos Aires - for a healthy steak. Everybody tells you about it, but still it's quite surprising when you have this massive piece of meat in front of you...
Of course you won't stay dry either - a tasty tinto will ensure that everything goes smooth in the throat. Salud!

Weihnachten?

Thinking Big

Sacsayhuaman, better known as "Sexy Woman" is a huge fortress like complex near Cuzco. Little is known about the big stones which are perfectly fit together. Some think it's a fortress, but much indicates it's rather a religious building. Whatever, the structure is amazing, not only from the views but also for the "hidden" things as the soil for instance: apparently the Incan people mixed lama fibres into the original soil to give it the strength needed to carry the heavy stones and absorb shock waves from earthquakes.

Man soll reisende ziehen lassen...

Simplify your life!

Our tour would visit the islands of Amantani and Taquile. On Amantani we stayed with local families in their homes. Even if I expected much less (after all the comments I've heard and read) life there is still very basic. Cooking gets still done on woodfires and electricity is only seen in few homes that can afford a solar panel. That's just a few though - most of them can't even afford visiting the mainland, except for getting supplies every 3 months or so.

Flotante

Guiness & Kiwi

Better known as Mari and Justin, these two lads were my company for most of my stay in Arequipa - and happened to be on the same route trough Colca as well!
I met them at the Terrasse Cafe, overlooking the Plaza de Armas, forcing them into a discussion about next plans.
While I was searching someone to join for Cotahuasi, Justin was desperately looking for someone to Climb over 6000m - and Justin, believe it or not, I regret not having joined, when seeing the cloudless sky, while you smiled at the panorama on the summit!

Living in Style

In the monastery of Arequipa one can discover astonishing things of about half a century of well kept secrets. The nuns living there had no contact to the outside world but lived a live in style - as you would expect from upper class girls. Just amazing some of the contrasts you get confronted with: not to posess a mirror - it could lead you to vanity. But have your own "house", furniture imported from Europe and - if you were a high class nun - your servants, not a problem.
The price was high tough; the only man who was allowed to see you was the doctor. Must have been a sick world...

Erster Advent!

Salud!

For some strange reason, I've spontanuously booked a tour to the Pisco Breweries around Ica - even if the plan was, to wait with tasting until being in Argentina...
Whatever, I'm sure now that I'm not a Pisco-Fan be it sour or not. The brewery was pretty much of a tourist trap and I was glad the taxi driver took us to a smaller one, where locals go to drink and fiesta. Besides the Pisco (which is actually fermented in theese old school pottery containers) the owner collects all sort of crap, including fotographs of beauty queens - and him.

Mad Max

Star Trek

We met Brenda and Nate in our Hostal. As they seemed ok we went on the Santa Cruz Trek with them and spent a goreous 4 days in the Cordillera Blanca - so undescribable you have to see for yourself!

Huarrraz!

Hay gente in ropa traditional.

The Rum Factory

Harvey and Mikey found a Taxidriver who would take us to "El Brujo" - an important excavation site - and additionally to "the Rum Factory", he knew a friend.
Very cool we thought, no tour would offer this. Nor did ours: Americano's wive was ill(?), his replacement had no idea and the friend turned out to be some small fish in an industrial complex. It would have no problem to enter - with an anouncement the day before. But so the door was all we saw of the factory and proofed once again: Never trust a taxista.

Staubiges...

Trujillo ist eine super Stadt. Mondaen, kolonial, kulinarisch...

Stoned

After a 3 hour ride on a bumpy "ringroad" that connects every house in the region we arrived at the rock that we had seen for a while lying in the middle of these valleys like a huge naval.
Topmost a wall built straight on the cliffs, hiding a secret not much less than the one of Machu Pichu. The culture of the Chachapoyas built their center of gravity here, a place for living, war and worship. So we think. But now one really knows, since a 1000 years leave a lot of unanswered questions and riddles. A magic place to find one's own explications.

Keep walking...

In Loja, I tried to get a pair of jeans and sneakers, but didn't buy any. Hence, I kept walking trough and around the city in my heavy Lowe boots, wondering about many little curiosities in this quit tipical and not very touristy place.
Triying to figure out the best way to get to the Podocarpus National Park I finally decided to head to Vilcabamba - a town where people under 100years are young.

Giovanni

Roeschti-Time

Accidentially walking by, we discovered the 4 manos, run by Sybille and Pascal. The Swiss flag outside the place let me hope for the exceptional and of course we went in to enjoy the hilarious Roeschti - since temperatures for Fondue weren't quite adequate...
I'm not sure if the other guests were so fancy about Laendler and I guess Deirdre and Niamh got a bit anoyed by all that Schwyzerduetsch - sorry about that, but it was a great timeout.

Harte Landung

Cuenca feiert Unabhaengigkeit.
